Wowhead Client
The
Wowhead Client
is a little application we use to keep our database up to date, and to provide you with some nifty extra functionality on the website like Today in WoW.
It serves several purposes:
It maintains a WoW addon called the
Wowhead Looter
, which collects data as you play the game!
It uploads the
collected data
to Wowhead in order to keep the database up-to-date!
Submitting frequently, at least once each day, helps to ensure the front page 'Today In...' section remains up-to-date.

Installing the Wowhead Client
Download the Wowhead Client.
Place it anywhere you wish on your computer.
Start it up, and go through the initial configuration process, which includes logging in to the client via the site.
Note for Windows 7: If the Wowhead Client is not running at all, you may need to install .NET Framework 4.7.2 manually. You can download the installer from Microsoft website at
https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/dotnet-framework/net472
You can close the program, and the addon will quietly gather your tasty dataz as you play the game. You don't need to run the Client program every time you play WoW, just when you are ready to upload your data, or keep its default settings to automatically upload in the background after you close WoW.
Uploading Data
Simply start up the Wowhead Client program and click the
Upload
button.
Once you have the
Wowhead Looter
add-on installed (by running the Client), you have access to a light in-game menu within the Interface AddOns menu, or you can alternatively make use of chat commands.

Below, here are the important functions of the Wowhead Looter explained:
Location
— The Wowhead Looter provides a little tool to quickly check your location on the zone map in x-y-coordinate form. There are three ways to display this information; in the chat box, on the World Map, and in a special tooltip. Alternative chat commands are
/wl loc
,
/wl loc map
, and
/wl loc tooltip
respectively, following the image order.

NPC Id
— The Wowhead Looter allows you to find out NPC ids conveniently for purposes such as finding the correct NPC to upload a screenshot for. Ids are displayed in a tooltip, with targeted NPCs taking priority over mouse-over targets. An alternative chat command for this is
/wl id
.
Data Reset
— If you for whatever reason want to delete data gathered in the current session, you can do so with this functionality. An alternative chat command is
/wl reset
.
